For the Expat Italy can be a little price compared to other places around the world so when you get offered a job make sure you look for things like company housing, companies vehicle, or some kind of cost of living allowance.  On the UBS report Milan and Rome are in the top 25 most expensive cities regarding housing.  Making sure your salary will cover your daily expenses and still allow you to pay existing bills is very important.  You will no doubt want to make sure you are able to build up some kind of savings while working overseas so ensure you will have enough left over to start or continue a good savings plan.

Housing Costs

A furnished four room apartment in Milan will run you between $4,960 and $2,680 while in Rome you will pay between $4,710 and $1,740.  A three room unfurnished apartment in Milan will cost between $2,220 and $1,500 and in Rome a price of $2,880 on the high end is a bit pricier than in Milan but on the low end Rome comes in a lot cheaper at $1,180.  The further you get away from the city the cheaper the housing gets.

Transportation Costs

In Milan and Rome taking a Bus, Tram or Metro will run you the $1.31 for a 10km trip or at least ten stops and for public transportation that is about middle of the road when compared to the other 71 cities on the UBS report. A taxi ride of 5km within city limits however is a little cheaper in Rome than in Milan with Rome costing about $11.46 and Milan costing about $12.64.  A second class ticket on the train for 200km in Rome costs about $31.12 and in Milan about $32.82.

Cost of Services

Haircuts, DSL, cable, eating out, movies and other common services will cost a little bit more in Rome than it will in Milan.  Each city came in just below the global average when it came to its service prices.

Price of Clothing

Buying Clothes in Italy is a bit on the high side for women clothing with both cites in the top 20 most expensive cites to buy women’s clothing in.  Men got off a little cheaper with Rome ranked at 21 and Milan coming in at 34.  Rome was the most expensive city out of the two in both women’s clothing and men’s clothing.

Electronics & Appliances

If you are going to take a job in Italy you might want to think about getting your Appliances and electronic devices in Milan.  Milan came in as one of the cheaper cities to get these products in.  Milan was about 14% cheaper than Rome in this category.

Advice from an Expat
Many people dream of vacationing in Italy but many expats enjoy living there as they experience the culture they also pull in a good paycheck.  But the key to enjoying your life overseas is pretty much the same as enjoying life where you are from.  You have to make sure you make enough money to cover your living expenses and have enough left over to pay bills and build a savings.   Make sure that you do your homework and ask as many questions as you need to when a company offers you a job in Italy.

You will want to ask about your tax liability.   How much of your relocation costs will the company cover is another important question.  The company may only cover up to so much in moving expenses.  Find out who is responsible for your housing when you first get there.  If you are going to get a housing allowance and get your own place you will want to make sure you have a place to stay until you find an apartment.  Simple questions like this are ones you will want to ask of your future employer.  Always remember to make sure that your employer is legit.  Contacting your embassy in that country and asking about the company is something you will want to do to make sure you are not getting scammed.  Remember the company should pay for your work visa and there should be no out of pocket expenses you need to give to the employer to process your paper work.

If you are interested in working overseas in Italy go to our Italy Jobs Page and if you cant find what you are looking for there go to the job search page.

Prices are in USD (prices between March – April 2009)

Prices in Dubai are from the UBS Prices and Earnings 2009 report.  The UBS Prices and Earnings Reports are something we recomend all expats to take a look at.  It is full of great information on the cost of living in variouse cities around the world.  The cities that they cover give you a good base line for the cost of living in different areas around the world.

Cars and houses are expensive and not everybody can buy it. But, loans are invented to support different people in such kind of hard situations.
